Chapter 5, Verse 24

Karma-yoga-Action in Krishna Consciousness

One whose happiness is within, who is active within, who rejoices within and is illumined within, is actually the perfect mystic. He is liberated in the Supreme, and ultimately he attains the Supreme.

Interpretation

This verse talks about a person who finds true happiness inside themselves rather than looking for it in outside things or activities. Let’s break this down simply.

A person who relies on outside pleasures—like fancy things, fun experiences, or social approval—might feel happy sometimes, but this happiness is often temporary. It doesn’t last long and can leave a person feeling empty once the excitement fades. Now, the verse states that real happiness comes from within. This means that instead of searching for approval or joy in the outside world, someone who is truly wise and free (the yogi mentioned) finds joy and satisfaction in their own mind and heart. They are content with who they are and don’t need constant outside validation.

When they experience this inner happiness, they become active in a different way. Instead of chasing after fleeting joys, they engage in actions and pursuits that come from their inner peace and understanding. They find delight in the smallest moments of life and are engaged in what they do because it feels right to them, not because they seek a reward or attention.

This inner light—that’s when they shine or glow from within as described in the verse. This person is not distracted or confused by the ups and downs of life. They are steady because their happiness doesn’t depend on external situations. They are said to be liberated, meaning they aren’t tied down by worldly issues or materials. They have achieved a state called 'brahma-bhuta,' suggesting they are in touch with a higher spiritual reality.

Ultimately, the verse tells us that this joyful, self-contented person returns to a pure state of being, which is often referred to as being close to God or the Supreme. They attain this spiritual connection simply by being content within themselves and enjoying life from their inner being rather than focusing solely on what the outside world offers.

In summary, the message encourages us to look within for true joy, helping us realize that lasting happiness is found not in material things, but in understanding and appreciating our own inner self.
