Interpretation

This verse is about what happens when a person dies. It tells us that if someone remembers Lord Krishna at the moment of their death, they will enter the divine realm of the Lord without any doubt. This idea of 'remembering' Krishna is very important. To be able to remember Krishna at such a crucial moment, you need to have practiced thinking of Him throughout your life.

The verse suggests that if a person hasn't spent their life thinking about or being devoted to Krishna, they may struggle to remember Him when they are dying. It’s like being in a situation where, if you’ve practiced something a lot, it becomes easy; but if you haven’t practiced, it’s very hard. Therefore, making an effort throughout life to connect with Krishna is vital.

One way to help remember Krishna is by chanting a special set of phrases known as the mahamantra. These are: 'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare; Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.' It’s a simple way to keep thinking about Krishna regularly.

Also, the verse highlights how to live in a way that prepares you for this moment. Following the teachings of a great saint named Lord Caitanya, one should try to be more tolerant than a tree, which means accepting things without getting upset. Being humbler than a blade of grass suggests that we should not be proud or think highly of ourselves. Lastly, offering respect to others and not expecting anything in return creates a loving and humble mindset.

By practicing these values and constantly remembering Krishna through chanting, when the time comes to leave this body, you’ll find it easier to think of Him and reach the highest goal - being close to Krishna in the afterlife.
