Interpretation

In this verse, we see Arjuna, who is being called 'Gudakesa' by Sanjaya. The name 'Gudakesa' means someone who has conquered sleep. When we think about sleep, it can also represent ignorance or a lack of awareness. So, in a deeper sense, Arjuna has overcome not just sleep but also ignorance due to his strong bond with Krishna.

Arjuna is a devoted follower of Krishna, which means he thinks about Krishna all the time, whether he is awake or asleep. For him, Krishna’s thoughts are always present in his mind. This full focus and devotion allow a person to overcome distractions, much like how Arjuna has managed to conquer sleep and ignorance.

This state where a person is completely absorbed in thinking about something divine, like Krishna, is called 'Krishna consciousness.' It’s similar to being so focused on a task that you forget everything else around you. When someone reaches this state, it can feel like they’re in a deep, peaceful understanding or connection.

Now, when Arjuna asked Krishna to position the chariot in the middle of the battlefield, it wasn't just about having a good spot to see the opposing army. Krishna, being the Lord of the senses (Hrishikesh), knows exactly what’s in Arjuna’s heart. So, when he drove the chariot to that specific place, it showed that Krishna understood Arjuna's need to see everyone in front of him before the battle began—a powerful moment reflecting both Arjuna's confusion and his commitment as he looked at the people he might have to fight against, including family and friends.

Thus, this verse captures an important turning point where Arjuna seeks clarity and guidance from Krishna as they stand between two armies, emphasizing his internal struggle and desire for understanding.
