Chapter 1, Verse 9

Observing the Armies on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra

There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.


Verse

अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः।
नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः।।1.9।।


anye cha bahavaḥ śhūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ
nānā-śhastra-praharaṇāḥ sarve yuddha-viśhāradāḥ

Interpretation

In this verse, Duryodhana, the leader of one side in the battle, is talking about his warriors. He is pointing out that many other brave fighters are ready to give up their lives to support him. These fighters are not only courageous, but they are also well-prepared for war. They carry different types of weapons, which means they are ready for various kinds of combat situations. Additionally, they are skilled in fighting, showing that they know how to use their weapons effectively and how to strategize in battle. Duryodhana is feeling confident and strong because he has such dedicated and capable warriors on his side. He believes that their combined strength will lead them to victory in the upcoming battle. He mentions specific names of warriors like Jayadratha, Krta-varma, and others, emphasizing that these figures are fully committed to him and have decided to fight, even if it costs them their lives. This adds to Duryodhana's confidence because he knows that he has a solid group of supporters behind him.
