Interpretation

In this verse, Krishna is speaking to Arjuna, who is often referred to as the mighty-armed one. Krishna asks Arjuna to pay attention to five important reasons that help make any action happen, as described in a philosophical approach known as Sankhya.

Sankhya is a way of thinking about knowledge and understanding the world. Krishna uses this framework to explain how actions come into existence. So, when we talk about actions—everything you do, like eating, working, or even thinking—there are specific factors that play a role in how those actions are carried out.

The idea here is that knowing these five factors can give you insight into what really goes into your actions. This is important because once you understand these causes, you can see that someone who acts with the right awareness, like being conscious of Krishna (in what’s called Krishna consciousness), doesn’t get tied down by the results of their actions.

This means that even if you do something that might normally seem wrong or that others might judge you for, if you understand the bigger picture that Krishna is about to explain, you can act without worrying about the consequences. It clarifies that our actions are part of a larger process and that we're not alone in making things happen.

By understanding these five causes, you get a better idea of how everything works in the world, which helps you take the right actions without being overly attached to or worried about what happens as a result.

So, Krishna is saying that grasping these five causes leads to a clearer understanding of why things happen, and that knowledge can help us navigate our responsibilities and choices in life more freely.
